We try out our first dirt road at seven in the morning. This uncompleted stretch of highway was the subject of Mario Vargas Llosas Death in the Andes. He speculated that local Quechua Indians would blame the mountain gods for the floods and landslides that have constantly prevented the roads completion and would see human sacrifice as the way to appease the gods, complete the road, and realize the economic boom that transportation through here would bring. In the early afternoon we reach Ayacucho, whose lovely colonial churches occupy us until evening. Hotel. 4x4 Peru.

We leave early by our 4x4 cars, visiting towns and pre-Inca ruins along the route to Puno, 400 km away and 3,800 meters above the sea level. Here we sleep on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Hotel.
We visit the floating islands of Uros and Taquile, where Aymara-speaking Indians live very traditional lives, despite, or maybe thanks to, tourism. We sleep again in Puno.
