HUCHUY QOSQO

One of the oldest and most important archeological complexes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco, after Pisaq and Ollantaytambo, is the well-known Huchy Qosqo, which in Quechua means “Little Cuzco”. It is located approximately 50 km north of Cusco at an altitude of 3600 meters above sea level in the high part of the Sacred Valley.

The complex includes patios, esplanades, platforms, small alleys and buildings of different magnitude and material. There are constructions made in adobe, stone and clay on bases of polished stone of fine finish, one of the main attractions, is a building of 3 floors or levels, where the first 2 are made of finely worked stone and the third floor is made of adobe, in spite of the time (it is estimated that it was constructed more than 500 years ago), still the structure remains standing.

The structures of the enclosure, are located in a way that resembles architecturally to the city of Cusco, it is for that reason that at the beginning of the XX century it receives the name of Huchuy Qosqo. The construction of this complex, is a sample of the knowledge and dominion of the Incas of the different techniques of construction with materials of the epoch, in spite of the centuries that have of antiquity, the complex still maintains the constructions.

It is said that this place was the royal household of the Inca Emperor Viracocha, who ordered the construction of the city of Huchuy Qosqo to leave the government and move away from the capital, looking for peace and tranquility.

Huchuy Qosqo can be accessed by two ways, from Cusco near Chinchero and the other way up from the Sacred Valley after crossing the Vilcanota River. During the tour and from the complex, there are spectacular views of the valley, the different snow-capped mountains that surround the area and the small Andean villages.
