WAQRAPUKARA

Waqrapukara is one of the best-kept and most enigmatic treasures of the Cusco region. Translated from Quechua as “horn fortress,” this mystical complex owes its name to the colossal rock formations at its summit, which resemble the ears of a llama.
Strategically located at 4,300 meters above sea level, defying the abyss of the Apurímac Canyon, the site is striking for its duality: it was both an exclusive center of religious worship and an impenetrable defensive fortress.

ITINERARY

The day begins early, between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., with pick-up from your hotel. The first leg of the journey takes approximately an hour and a half, during which we will make our first stop for a delicious breakfast.

Continuing our journey, we will appreciate the Pomacanchi Lagoon along the way.

The real hiking adventure begins in the upper part of the Santa Lucía community. We’ll start our hike, which will take approximately one hour and twenty minutes, to the Waqrapukara fortress. Once there, our guide will give us a brief explanation of the site. Free time to explore and take photos. We’ll also enjoy a unique lunch with a privileged view, right in front of the imposing fortress.
Finally, we’ll return to the starting point of the hike, where our transportation will be ready to take us back. We’ll arrive in the city of Cusco at approximately 6:00 PM.

General Recommendations

Clients who live in places of less than 1000 mts of altitude, we recommend that they have to be in Cusco at least 2 – 3 days of the tour to acclimatize.
