Find Your Ideal Route

There’s no single way to experience Machu Picchu; there’s one for every traveler’s style:

  • Looking for the perfect photo? The panoramic circuits will take you to the highest terraces for the best views of the citadel.
  • Want the complete historical experience? The classic circuits allow you to walk among the original walls and temples where the Incas lived.
  • Prefer a gentle hike or an extreme adventure? Choose from accessible trails in the lower area or challenge yourself on the peaks of Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

Attention Travelers! Daily slots are strictly limited, and the most popular circuits sell out months in advance.

Official Circuits and Routes

You can no longer freely wander throughout the complex; now you must choose a specific ticket that grants you access to a particular circuit and route.

There are currently 3 main circuits, which are divided into 10 entry routes.

Circuit 1: Panoramic Circuit (Upper Zone)

This circuit is ideal for those seeking the classic postcard photo from the Guardhouse and panoramic views of the citadel. It primarily crosses the upper part of the agricultural terraces. Important note: This circuit does not allow access to the heart of the stone ruins (urban zone).

It has 4 available routes:

  • Route 1-A (Machu Picchu Mountain Route): Allows you to climb to the highest peak and take the upper panoramic tour. (Physical difficulty: High).
  • Route 1-B (Upper Terrace Route): The classic and direct route to the Guardhouse for the traditional photo and exit. (Physical difficulty: Low).
  • Route 1-C (Intipunku / Sun Gate Route): Available only during peak season. Allows you to walk towards the ancient entrance of the Inca Trail. (Physical difficulty: Medium).
  • Route 1-D (Inca Bridge Route): Includes the classic photo and a short, flat walk to the dizzying Inca wooden bridge. (Physical exertion: Low).

Circuit 2: Classic Circuit (The Complete Experience)

This is the most sought-after ticket and the first to sell out. It allows you to take the classic photo from a lower terrace and also walk through the archaeological zone to see the main temples.

It has two routes available:

  • Route 2-A (Designed Route): The most complete circuit of all. It includes the postcard photo and visits to the Temple of the Sun, Main Temple, Intihuatana (depending on the schedule), Sacred Rock, and Water Mirrors.
  • Route 2-B (Lower Terrace Route): Very similar to the previous one, but access to the postcard photo area is from a slightly lower terrace. It offers virtually the same internal tour.

Circuit 3: Royal Circuit (Lower Area)

This circuit enters directly from the lower part of Machu Picchu. Perfect for seniors. The route is less steep. It does not include the classic postcard photo.

It has 4 available routes:

  • Route 3-A (Huayna Picchu Mountain Route): This route gives you access to the famous and imposing mountain that appears behind Machu Picchu. On the descent, you will explore the Royal Area. (Physical difficulty: High / Not suitable for people with vertigo).
  • Route 3-B (Designed Royal Route): The basic tour through the lower area. Visit the water fountains, the Temple of the Sun, the Inca’s House, and the residential areas. (Physical difficulty: Low).
  • Route 3-C (Huchuy Picchu Mountain Route): This route allows you to climb the small hill next to Huayna Picchu, in addition to the tour through the lower area. (Physical difficulty: Medium).
  • Route 3-D (Great Cavern / Temple of the Moon Route): Available only during peak season. A challenging hike that descends the back of Huayna Picchu to a unique underground temple. (Physical difficulty: High).
